My name is Brooke Unger. I am a Canadian woman from a German background. I was born and raised in Prince George, where I grew up with my family. I graduated from Duchess Park Secondary School in 2016 as a French Immersion student. After high school, I attended the University of Northern British Columbia, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce, specializing in Marketing.
After graduating, I spent several years living in Montreal and travelling around the world. I have had the opportunity to visit 32 countries, where I developed a love for exploring new places and immersing myself in different cultures. I became fascinated by learning new languages and discovering the different ways people live, communicate, and connect with one another. These experiences have helped me become more open-minded and curious about the world around me, and I hope to bring this curiosity into my teaching.
As a future educator, I want to create a classroom where students feel welcomed, respected, and comfortable being themselves. I hope to help students develop an appreciation for different cultures, perspectives, traditions, and ways of knowing. I believe that learning about the world can help students become more curious, empathetic, and respectful of the people and communities around them.
Food is one area where I would especially like to connect my experiences to teaching. I have always enjoyed experiencing different foods while travelling and learning about the cultures and traditions behind them. I would love to incorporate food and cooking into my teaching through hands-on activities that allow students to explore culture, history, community, and creativity. I also enjoy crocheting and doing crafts, which are other interests I hope to bring into my classroom through creative and hands-on learning opportunities.
Being active is also an important part of my life. I enjoy playing sports, spending time outdoors, and staying active with friends and family. One of my favourite activities is pickleball. I value the way sports encourage teamwork, communication, perseverance, and connection with others. As an teacher, I hope to create opportunities for students to be active and learn through movement, while recognizing that physical activity can support both social and personal growth.
As I continue through the UNBC Teacher Program, I hope to grow as both a learner and an educator. I recognize that becoming a teacher is a lifelong learning process, and I look forward to learning from my professors, classmates, future students, and the communities I work with. I hope to continue reflecting on my own experiences and learning how I can create an inclusive classroom where every student feels valued and has opportunities to succeed.
